Reflection 6

Just another beautiful Friday with the same lecturer, Mr. Helmi. This week’s lecture was about video shooting, video transfer, video design, steps to create mobile tags, and how to implement what we have learned in our future teaching. Notes for this lecture could be found here.

For the first part of the lecture, we were taught about the production stage. In this stage, we were taught about the shot framing. Shot framing depends on subject’s position in the video shot. This position will picture different meaning and messages. Shot framing also depends on the field of view (FOV). As what we have learned, there are three types of FOV which consists of (i) the closest : close-up, (ii) the middle : middle shot, (iii) the widest : wide shot/long shot. Examples of these FOV could be found here.

Apart from that, we were also taught about the Rule of Thirds. Rule of Thirds is when subject is on 1/3 or 2/3 on a picture either it is from above/below or left/right.

My very own Rule of thirds picture from high angle! :D

The second part of production stage is the video shot angle. The video shot angle consists of three types of angle which are normal angle, high angle and low angle. Examples of these video shot angles can be found here.

The third part of production stage is the video camera movements. We were taught that there are five types of movements that we can use while shooting a video. They are zoom, pan, tilt, dolly, and truck.

  • Zoom : Out and in
  • Pan : Right and left (Photographer is static)
  • Tilt : Up and down (Photographer is static)
  • Dolly : In and out (Photographer moves)
  • Truck : Left and right (Photographer moves)
Then we were taught about the tips while shooting a video.

Sarah and I learned how to shoot video in different movements.

Then we moved on to the next part which was the post production stage. For this stage, we learned about the video and audio editing. It is about arranging the video shot in a proper sequence. We can arrange, add, change, cut and delete the video in whatever way that we want. Apart from that, we can also apply video effects on the video such as to filter and color correction, as well as to add the video transition.

For the final part of the lecture before our mid semester break, we were taught about ways to implement what we have learned in our future teaching. There are two major ways of this implementation – technology and tools. Below are the ways and their reasons for implementing them in teaching :

1. Technology

Video
- To assist students who need visualization in learning

Mobile blog
- Reflection of own teaching
- Reflection of community of teachers
- Reflection of students’ learning

Mobile Augmented Reality
- To show how virtual info can be mixed with the real world.

Mobile Tags
- For outside learning : marketing and entrepreneurship

2. Tools

Scripts and storyboards
- Sequence and events
- How to plan

Paper prototyping
- How to plan
- Visualize their design and output
- Collaboration
- Share ideas

User Innovation Management Tool
- Needs and requirements for teaching
- To foresee what students expect from the lesson

For the tutorial part, we were taught about how to create mobile tags. To create mobile tags, we were introduced to a new website which is the QR-Code Generator. I have create one for my own wordpress! You may want to try to scan on it.

Mobile tag for my wordpress.

To scan it, you must download the mobile tag scanner on your handheld devices. This mobile tag has been widely used in businesses as a replacement for printed tickets, to promote businesses on brochure etc.

It was really worth it to attend the class before mid semester break. We have learned so many new interesting things in this course. And I will slowly try to improve techniques in shooting video in future, as well as taking pictures!

Dayang and I wore the same shirt last Friday!

Till then, goodbye! May everyone enjoy their mid semester break. B-)

Reflection 5

For this week’s class, we were taught about the Design of Group Website/Moblogging and Business Card. To create the design, we were advised to use the User Innovation Management (UIM) tool as follows :

The UIM Tool

As in the graphic above, UIM Tool is a module to help us in creating the website, for instance. It consists of six steps which include select, plan, insight, vision, sketch, and present.

  1. The first step of UIM Tool is to select. In this step, we are required to recognize message that we want to convey and who our target audience are.
  2. Secondly, is to plan. Planning step is to plan the main interface layout that includes sections, buttons, arrangement of sections and buttons, main highlight of the website, website navigator, color, etc.
  3. The third step is the insight. It is to question us where to get the ideas as well as what emotions that we want our website visitor feel when they visit our website.
  4. Next is vision. Vision includes the content expectation of the audience. It also includes which button that audience is likely to click.
  5. The fifth step is to sketch. Sketching is to design and to picture how the website would be in the end.
  6. The last step is to present. Presentation is about explanation of the storyboard or the sketch that we have made.

In our own group, we were asked to create a paper prototype for our company blog. This paper prototype was to convey the idea and design of our blog or website. It should include :

1. Main page

  • General summary of the website
2. Products page
  • Image gallery
  • Video gallery
3. About us
  • Who we are
  • Our team member
4. How to contact us
Mr. Helmi provided us with a black board , sticky papers and colourful markers to create the prototype. It was really fun to create the prototype as it boost our creativity to do such thing. Most of our time in the class was spent to create our website prototype. Each group was assigned to create a website prototype of their company and at the end of the class, we were to present the website paper prototype to the whole class.

While creating the paper prototype

Me working on paper prototype!

Closer view of our paper prototype

Our Million Steps Paper Prototype

As you can see, our paper prototype is quite interesting, isn’t it? :P Anyway, we did present our paper prototype to the class..and so did the other groups!

Paper prototype presentation

It was really fun to see every group came up with our own paper prototype. It was such an awesome experience to create paper prototype as it showed our rough ideas on our own website. We will try our best to create our website that resembles our prototype.

Anyway, I must admit that this class would be the best class compared to previous classes. Really enjoyed every moment of creating the paper prototype with group mates.

Reflection 4

This week’s lecture was conducted by Puan Hazrati. The lecture was about Designing Media and Instruction which include the Needs Assessment, Goal Analysis and The Use of Media in Instruction. In a nutshell, it was all about to find the best medium to teach students of different backgrounds so that they can understand and will be attracted to the lesson.

The first step of designing media and instruction is to identify the Needs Assessment.

Needs Assessment is to address differences of some type of performances of target audience. The objectives of Needs Assessment are to discuss what a needs assessment is and when and why to conduct one, to identify the steps in planning a needs assessment, to demonstrate how to characterize an audience, to select an appropriate method for data collection, to understand how to use questions appropriately, to identify considerations for analyzing and managing data, list the benefits of conducting a needs assessment. These Needs Assessment training modules can be seen in this website. There are four general steps for conducting Needs Analysis.

Need Analysis Steps

Goal analysis is to plan for a new goal in an organization or in teaching and learning if it is in teaching context. Based on Addie Instructional Phase, there are six steps in analyzing goals.

Goal Analysis Step

More explanations on needs and goal analysis could be found here. :)

As the class went on, we were also taught about the uses of media for teaching and learning. These are for preparing instruction media for teaching students of different backgrounds. It includes the steps of preparing instruction media, media characteristics, classification of instruction media, and choosing the media. The purposes of using media in teaching are to :

  • Expose technology to students
  • Be innovative in teaching and learning
  • Gain students’ interest
  • Promote interesting teaching and learning
  • Enable clear and effective explanation
  • Promote meaningful learning

The media characteristics include students’ learning, movement, visual, color, editing, and mobility. This depends on how students could catch up the lesson in the class. Teacher should be able to recognize which appropriate media that could capture students’ interest and understanding.  At the same time, we were also taught about the classification of instruction media which includes the following :

  • Static Presentation : Transparency, Power Point Slides, Microfilm
  • Non-static Presentation : Video
  • Static Image : Graphic, Charts, Photograph
  • Exhibition Material : White board, Bulletin board

Apart from that, a teacher should be able to choose the best media for teaching and learning. The criteria for choosing media includes :

  • Objective
  • Students’ ability
  • Physical Equipment
  • Cost
  • Utility
  • Appropriateness
  • Format
  • Relevance

For the second part of the lecture, we listened to Mr. Helmi’s lecture on pre-production phase. The slides on pre-production phase could be found on Mr. Helmi’s blog. :) Then, we were asked to discuss about our video production with the help of Mr. Helmi.

Our draft!

As promised, Mr Helmi brought iPad again to class last Friday. He wanted all of us to explore the applications on the iPad. This week, he introduced us to the white board application. It was really awesome when you draw something on it! Lol!

Me and the iPad!

In addition, Educational Technology class never brings me down. It always made my Friday. I have learnt a lot from last Friday class especially to choose the best media for teaching and learning. I am so looking forward to next week’s Educational Technology class!

Reflection 3

Our Educational Technology class this week was conducted by Mr. Helmi.  He is one of Dr. Rosseni’s PHD students. We were taught about Mobile Blogging (Moblogging) where he provided us with a modul video website  to assist us for further understanding. He provided video production content, modules on video production etc on his website. Moblog in a nutshell, is a new way to publish a post of a blog through mobile phones or other handheld devices. Instead of just using computer, we can also post any post from every where and any time as long as we have the internet connection and mobile phones that allowed us to connect to the internet. During this class, we were given the chance to use an iPad.

Us on iPad!

It was such a great opportunity to learn on how to use iPad. We were also told that Moblog is available for Android phones or tablets as well as the Blackberries.

Apart from that, we were also taught about Augmented Reality. This is as we are to create a video of interesting places in Malaysia for our one whole semester project. Below is one of the examples of augmented reality video that could explain what augmented reality really means. :D

In this video, we can see that there were some parts of certain movies were augmented to the physical reality video. The video is really interesting and will look forward to learn this skill in future!

For the second part of the lecture, we were asked to create a group of four or five and my group mates are Dayang Nurfaezah, Pei Si, and Sarah. We were asked to create a company and make a video to promote interesting places in Malaysia. The theme of the video is about tourism. Dr. Rosseni suggested a place to be promoted which is Putrajaya. As discussed, our group concept was to include many other places rather than Putrajaya only. We will try our best to find opportunity to explore interesting places in Malaysia.  Before the class ended, we were asked to create our own group blog. We need to update our video progress in this group blog.

This class was really fruitful as we were exposed to Moblog as well as to augmented reality. It was such a great experience to learn about something new though it looked difficult to digest at first. Anyway, I believe  that learning is never easy but it gets easy once we understood what it really is.

Reflection 2

Last Friday class was conducted by Puan Hazrati binti Husnin as Dr. Rosseni was not around. It was fun to learn with her as she is friendly and she conveyed her lecture in a very understandable way. She taught about Systematic Planning In The Use of Media And Evaluation and gave a lot of examples to make us understand better.

In this lesson, we were introduced to the terms Instructional Design which can be defined as to describe the process involved in the systematic planning instruction. As to work on an instructional design, Assure Model is the best guide which consists of six steps – 1) Analyzing Learners, 2) State Objectives, 3) Select Media and Materials, 4) Utilize Media and Materials, 5) Require Learner Participation, 6) Evaluate and Revise.

Assure Model

We were also introduced to the most easiest to memorize model which is the ABCDs of Mager’s Tips on Instructional Objectives – where A stands for Audience, B for Behaviour, C for condition and D for Degree. For this part, we were asked to make an example. My example is as follow :

Form 3 students will be able to write an essay using the points given by their teacher in five paragraphs.

In this sentence, Form 3 students is the audience. to write an essay is the behaviour. the points given by their teacher is the condition. five paragraphs is the degree.

Mager, 1984

By using the ABCDs model (Mager, 1984), it is easier for teachers to recognize students’ ability on  particular skills. It is somehow a way to evaluate students’ understanding after being taught in a lesson.

Apart from that, we were also introduced to a few other models by Smith and Ragen, Morrison, Ross and Kemp, Dick and Carey as well as the Multimedia Learning.

In my opinion, it is important for teachers to learn and to practice numerous methods to deliver their teaching to attract students’ attention as well as to make students understand the learning. At the end of the learning, teachers should evaluate students whether they understand or not the lesson that has been taught. If not, teachers should change or manage their methods to a more effective way because students are of different background, and their ability to understand on certain things differs from each other.

Instead of just making a lesson fun, teachers must consider about students’ ability to understand, which is the most essential part in teaching and learning. And this course is the best platform to lead future teachers to produce a creative and innovative teaching and learning in a class as it promotes many ways to deliver one’s teaching.

The most common medium used by teachers

Hope to learn more new things in next class. :)

Reflection 1

Hello again to Dr. Rosseni as she will be my lecturer for GGGE2153 Educational Technology course this semester (2 2011/2012). This course will expose us to producing electronic teaching aids. Educational technology will guide us to produce creative power points and websites, to make videos, and anything involving photography. Dr. Rosseni in her first lecture has explained about the assignments for this semester as in this course outline. She also showed a few video made by our seniors in previous years, which I think was really cool.

From left: Farha, Chester and me. Just want to show everyone that I love taking pictures!

I am so looking forward for this kind of course and this would be my favorite course for the semester as I love dealing with technology. At the same time, this course will help to boost creativity among students and it is important for future teachers like us! I am going to work hard on this course and hoping that I will get good grade in this course. :D
